Text Box: Our first tasting this month is the San Angelo Pinot Grigio 2006 from Castello Banfi Montalcino. This Pinot Grigio is a white grape variety that is also found in Alsace, France, where it is called Pinot Gris. It is also grown with success in Oregon and California. In 1970, Italy produced approximately 11,000 cases of Pinot Grigio — and is now the number one Imported Italian varietal into the United States, selling more than 10 million cases. This one has intense, fruity aromas of ripe melon, tropical fruit and pear. Pale, straw in color with greenish hues. Fruit-forward—with pear, banana and tropical fruit and a bit of lemon zest. Fuller bodied, crisp taste and full of flavor. Delightfully balanced and well structured with a very rich, long clean finish. This one comes alive in your mouth!! A delightful accompaniment to seafood, veal/poultry or a creamy pasta dish. A very nice change of pace from a Chardonnay. Retails for $15.99/bottle.

This next one is full of character and taste. It is the 2003 Chianti Classico Riserva D.O.C.G. from Banfi. The D.O.C.G. stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata Garantita. The Italian Wine board controls the production and labeling of wines produced in Italy, through tasting-control boards. The G represents that they absolutely guarantee the stylistic authenticity of a wine. Produced from Sangiovese grapes grown in the ‘Classico’ region of Chianti. Only one fifth of all Chianti is Chianti Classico Riserva. There are many different styles of Chianti. It is important to find the style that you like. This one happens to be one of our favorites. It successfully exhibits good balance, beautifully ripe, supple black cherry aroma. Nice garnet color. This mature, complex wine is layered with exotic wood scents on top of cherry and cranberry fruit, with a hint of cocoa, supple tannins and a lingering, spicy/dry finish. This one will pair excellent with a hearty pasta dish like lasagna or roasted beef or lamb. Retails for $19.99/bottle.

Heard it through the grapevine. . .
