Text Box: Our first feature this month is the 2004 Erath Pinot Noir. Oregon makes some of the best Pinot Noirs in the world and Dick Erath got this one right. From nursery propogation all the way through bottling, Dick is fully involved in the winemaking process. He devotes a lot of his time to the viticultural end of the business, since he believes and proclaims “Great wines are grown, not made”.
This wine has fresh fruit aromas of cherry, raspberry, and blueberry. Youthfully exuberant with lots of sweet fruit on the palate with hints of spice and vanilla. A screw cap makes it easy to get into, and this wine is easy to like, especially at $16.99 bottle. It’s has a clean and silky-smooth entry with the same flavors, particularly cherries, and a pleasing spiciness. So versatile with food . . . Fish, fowl, beef or pasta work. The perfect house red!! Try with Thai or Chinese pepper sauce, thin crust pizza margherita, pasta with red sauce or wild mushroom orzo.

Our next selection is the 2004 Pinot Gris, from the King Estate Winery. Which was awarded Oregon 2005 Producer of the year, by an International non-profit organization. King Estate received initial organic certification from Oregon in 2002, and was re-certified in July for all 1,033 acres of grapevines, orchards, gardens and landscape plants. This lovely, complex gris, has bright fruit and balanced acidity. Full mid-pallet offers complex tropical fruit and rounded texture. Flavors of grapefruit, apricot, melon, orange peel and lime. Smooth and rich, well balanced with clean, crisp finish. This Pinot Gris is one of my favorites with lobster or scallops. Retails $15.99/bottle.
