Text Box: We are going to start this month’s tastings with the Viognier Nord Sud—from the talented young Wine Maker Laurent Miquel. He specializes in the production of opulent Viognier wines on his family estate in the South of France. This particular wine is made from the Viognier grape variety—which is rare, exotic and yields tiny quantities of fruit. This limited edition wine is produced from selected blocks planted with the optimum North-South orientation meaning that the grapes are exposed to the gentle warmth of the morning and evening rays but protected from the burning effects of the midday sun. They are harvested at night when the vineyard temperatures are the lowest. Matured in new French oak barrels this Viognier has subtle pear and apricot flavors and a hint of nuttiness. Ideal for pre-dinner drinks or served with grilled seafood or chicken dishes. It is golden yellow in color with pale green highlights. (Retails for $14.99/bottle)

Spectacular and sultry describes this next wine. In the lovely village of Fixin, in Cote de Nuits, south of Dijon, there is the tiny vineyard of ’La Maziere’, on 2.2 ha (5 acres). We have selected this great Pinot Noir ~ Fixin ’Cuvee Signature’. In 1750, together with his eldest son, Michel Bouchard set up as a wine merchant in Beaune, in choosing the town of Beaune he was establishing himself in the very heart of Burgundy and its vineyards. Working in very close connection with local wine-growers, he acquired unique know-how in the métier of wine merchant, winemaker and cellarer. He was inspired by total commitment to ensuring perfect quality and authentic style and upholding the reputation of his name, and succeeded in fully mastering the art of selecting the grapes and subsequently making and maturing wines. This has now been Bouchard Aine & Fils’s vocation for over two centuries.
This wine comes with a beautiful dark ruby red with deep purplish-blue notes. It’s deliciously toasted with a blend of fresh fruits aromas. Firm tannins, bringing structure and firmness. Spices and vanilla accompany a generous finish. Will age well for 8 to 10 years—but is ready to drink now if you can not wait. Serve with meats in sauce, game and soft cheeses—along with the movie Sideways!! (Retails for $22.99/bottle).
