Text Box: Australia is the second largest exporter of wine to the United States, after Italy. Our first pick Yangarra Shiraz (the Aussies’ name for Syrah) scored 92 points in the Wine Advocate and also made #27 in the top 100 wines from Wine Enthusiast 2007. This wine comes from the McLaren Vale region and is estate grown in the coolest vineyards, giving low yield times to slowly accumulate concentrated powerful flavours. Rich spice, blackberry fruit and hints of sweet vanilla are the hallmarks of this remarkable shiraz. On the palate, the wine is rich and full-bodied, with intense blackberry and dark cherry flavors, plus soft tannins. This wine will stand up to any hockey team from the North. Will pair excellent with grilled entrees or to be enjoyed all by itself. Retails for $23.99/bottle.
Birds of a feather, drink together says our second Aussie pick—The Step Rd—Black Wing Chardonnay. This fine wine is a blend of fruit from the prestigious Longhorne Creek and McLaren Vale regions. The fruit driven style and freshness of this wine will be hard to beat. Aged in French oak for 3 months. It has green color with golden hues. Aromas of fresh peaches, with pineapple and melon. On the palate, it has creamy peach and melon flavors, complimented by a smooth vanilla butterscotch flavor and a long lingering finish. An amazing, value-priced Chardonnay gives this wine a whole new meaning to daylight savings time. Perfect with grilled seafood and crab cakes. Retails for $12.99/bottle.
